American gold medalists reprimanded after protests at Pan American Games

(CNN) — The two US athletes who exhibited throughout separate National Anthems in a regional sports competition earlier this month have been placed on probation for 12 months.
US Olympic & Paralympic Committee Chief Executive Officer Sarah Hirshland wrote to hammer thrower Gwen Berry and fencer Rush Imboden, statingwhile I admire your perspective — and that of every athlete for whom I am lucky enough to function — that I personally disagree with the second and way in which you opted to convey your views.
All participants signed agreements not to create any political, religious, or racial remark in the Pan American Games.
Hirshlands letter cautioned the two athletes another signal violation could lead tomore serious sanctions than for a athlete in good standing.
Both athletes can still participate in events that are sanctioned. Berry will participate in the entire world track and field championships a month in Doha, Qatar.
individual responded immediately although CNN has reached out through their sports federations to Imboden and Berry.
Berrys representative would like to focus on her instruction and told CNN interviews are not being done by her.
She wants no distractions as her objective is to medal for the USA at the womens hammer, something that has never been achieved before, John Nubani composed in an email to CNN.
After her demonstration of a raised fist, she advised track and field site FloTrack:I understand what I did, and I know I broke the rules, and Ill make that sacrifice. Im honored to make that sacrifice
While they each were onto a medal podium, berry raised her fist in the air and bowed her head and Imboden knelt on his right knee.
Taking a knee during the anthem became a kind of protest following former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick hauled then took a knee against people of color throughout the 2016 football period in protest of police brutality and injustice.
Ever since then, many athletes, out of NFL players, to football superstar Megan Rapinoe to amateur high schoolers have knelt sparking anger from others and Trump.
Following he knelt Imboden said:We have to call for change. This week I am honored to represent Team USA at the Pan Am Games, carrying home silver and gold. My pride was cut short by the various shortcomings of this country that I hold dear in my heart. Racism, gun control, a president that spreads hatred, and mistreatment of immigrants are at the top of a listing.
I decided to (sacrifice) my moment now at the top of the podium to call attention to issues that I think have to be addressed. I encourage others to please use your programs for change and empowerment, he explained.
Imboden is rated as the worlds second-best in the foil event, and won a bronze medal on Tuesday at the mens individual foil. He helped the US win gold.
As Imboden knelt, Nick Itkin and his Gerek Meinhardt stood.
Berry took gold in the womens hammer throwand she lifted her fist in the air and bowed her at the conclusion of the National Anthem. It was a protest reminiscent of John Carlos and Tommie Smith at the 1968 Olympics.
Somebody must stand for all the injustices which are going on in America and a president whos making it even more challenging, she told USA Today. It is too important not to say something.
The probationary period would include the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, which start July 24.
