VAR: Premier League referee chief Mike Riley admits four mistakes this season

VAR has generated four errors up to now through the Premier League season, referees’ chief Mike Riley has confessed.
The illustrations, including Fabian Schar’s equaliser to Newcastle against Leicester and Watford midfielder Youri Tielemans’ stamp on the Callum Wilson of Bournemouth, were discussed at Thursday’s meeting of Premier League shareholders.
Both of the other errors were the referee’s decision not to award Manchester City a punishment when Jefferson Lerma stood David Silva’s foot at the Bournemouth box and a decision not to give West Ham a punishment after Sebastien Haller was introduced from Norwich’s Tom Trybull.
Riley, the managing director of this elite refereeing human body, PGMOL Ltd, told Sky Sports News:”We are learning as we move along and we are continuously improving.
“Out of the four match rounds, there are some great examples where we’ve intervened.
“There were six incidents where VAR has suggested the referee and we have a much better choice as a result.
“There were four incidents where VAR did not intervene and had they achieved, we’d have a better knowledge of the role VAR plays from the game.
“[The mistakes] are all about the conclusion of VAR and also the procedure that we embrace.
“All these are examples were VAR might have experienced a benefit and intervened to assist the referee daily.”
When pressed on why those mistakes were created, Riley included:”A mix of factors. That’s the thing because this project evolves, and we are always learning.
“We’re trying not to interrupt the flow of this match but on such occasions, the judgement must have been it was a clear and obvious mistake.
“One of the really positive things about the initial four game rounds has become the quality of performances that are like-minded.
“Each of the referees have incorporated what we will need to perform with VAR in their refereeing while focusing on creating real-time decisions.”
