New York Giants coach Pat Shurmur’s closing words before breaking for the summer suggested Big Blue would foster a quarterback competition between Eli Manning and rookie Daniel Jones when training camp opens.
The remarks surprised many following the Giants insisted all spring that Manning remained prepared to start a second season.
Manning himself isn’t influenced by Shurmur. In the Manning Passing Academy, Eli informed NFL Network’s Rhett Lewis Friday that he does not think he’s fighting Jones to maintain his job.

“I mean no, I don’t feel like it is a competition,” Manning said in an interview which will air on NFL Network’s Total Access Friday night. “I feel like I’ve got to do my job and I have got to compete daily and attempt to get better each day. That’s how it’s been my entire life and that is only the way I have always approached training each day to improve, to earn my place on the team, to make the respect of their teammates and do it each year.”
Manning does not consider Jones contest and said he has no issue nurturing a rookie QB that the Giants hope will turn into the next franchise signal-caller.
“We’ve got new guys and I’m trying to construct a relationship together and get them up to speed so I’m trying to do my job in the quarterback space,” Manning said. “I’ve always been great with young quarterbacks, whomever has been in there, trying to get them up to speed, educating them about defenses or fashions or what our defense plays. So I am doing the same thing with Daniel and now I’m going to be a fantastic teammate, I’m going to do the very best that I could do and help everyone on the Giants be prosperous.”
Manning’s dismissal of a supposed QB contest similarly echoes Jones’ response to Shurmur’s remarks, once the rookie said he’d not been told by coaches he’d have a opportunity to get started.
Whether or not it’s a full-time contest, the repetitions each QB gets when training camp opens on July 24 will be carefully monitored. A buzz will start if Jones gets repetitions with the 1s early in camp, but Manning doesn’t seem concerned about that possibility.
Manning noted that he recalls his own”competition” with Kurt Warner back in 2004 — the veteran started the first half of this season before Big Blue turned into Manning for the last seven tilts.
“Definitely drawing on this and that I talk to Daniel and I see many similarities at the situation and how things are going and just what he is trying to do, his character,” Manning said. “He is coming to this team, he’s just hoping to learn the playbook, learn the names of everyone, got to earn the respect of his teammates. He has so much happening. He’s got the New York media, dealing with themall of a sudden they are saying matters Day 1. … So only work hard, take your work seriously, but do not take yourself too seriously — if you’re able to do this — like your teammates, listen to your coaches and we’re all in this together and we will get through it.”
Manning also admitted he’s seen the memes indicating Jones is a facsimile of himself, also noticed their personalities are similar as rookies.
“I see it,” Manning said. “He’s a good kid, he’s quiet and he is just hoping to understand, get a good feel for when to let his personality come out. I was the exact same way. My newcomer I wasn’t going to say — Tiki Barber, Michael Strahan, you got these huge characters — I am just going to keep my mouth closed, be on time, work my tail off in the weight room, ask my questions to the trainer after the meeting is over and also make sure I know what I am doing before inform Tiki what his route is or I inform Amani Toomer,’Hey, I do not believe you did that right.’ You have to make the respect. You got to have hit in the mouth a couple of times and wake up… until you do a great deal of talking.”
Catch Manning’s interview Friday night on NFL Total Access at 7 pm ET.
