Ref Watch: Liverpool should have been awarded a penalty against Newcastle, says Dermot Gallagher

Liverpool should have been awarded a penalty when Newcastle defender Jamaal Lascelles hauled Joel Matip, states Dermot Gallagher.
The Premier League referee yields with Ref Watch to get his state on a few of this weekend’s largest incidents, including the possible penalty at Anfield.
Penalties for Manchester United and Watford will also be considered, plus a lousy match for Sheffield United, together with Gallagher offering his views…
INCIDENT: Lascelles pulled Matip round shoulders to the ground near the far post with his arms As Liverpool sent an corner. Referee Andre Marriner waved the claims for a penalty off with nothing given through VAR.
DERMOT’S VERDICT decision.
DERMOT SAYS:”The positioning of referee Andre Marriner is where you would expect him to be for a corner. He clearly did not believe there was enough contact, he can tell that. But I believe it was a penalty, others do not.
“It is tougher for the helper because he’s got a horizontal look at it. In incidents like that, you would like to be looking sideways on to see the effect.
“In case a subjective decision goes to VAR, it has to fulfill their threshold. I can not tell you what that is but it hasn’t met it to overturning, or so the helper at Stockley Park can not provide a punishment.”
INCIDENT: Watford were given a penalty in the 81st minute over online of the penalty area. Pereyra converted the spot kick to determine Watford draw level with Arsenal.
The VERDICT: Correct decision of DERMOT.
DERMOT SAYS:”It’s online and the line belongs to the playground so you would say it is at least on the line and I’d say it’s definitely from the box. It’s a punishment, he is tripped by him and it’s a filthy. The key here was the referee’s position. He up with drama, he is behind them and he has seen it. The helper will be in line and tell him it’s in the box.”
INCIDENT: Leicester shield Caglar Soyuncu bundled Marcus Rashford over in the Region, giving Manchester United an early punishment. Rashford scored and stepped up.
DERMOT’S VERDICT: Correct decision.
DERMOT SAYS:”I think it is a punishment without uncertainty, but ahead, the ball rolls down Andreas Pereira’s arm, but it does not result in a target or an immediate goalscoring opportunity. It is handball, but it’s obviously handball and an injury can not be given.
“But it follows on and Soyuncu catches Rashford, which is a penalty and the perfect choice is provided. It proves that the forward is not always penalised.”
INCIDENT: Sheffield United had a goal disallowed early in the second halfof the Oli McBurnie scored but John Egan was penalised for offside from the build-up following a VAR review.
DERMOT’S VERDICT choice.
DERMOT SAYS:”This is the area where VAR is completely brilliant as it’s nigh on impossible to a helper to find out who started in an offside position, but the VAR explained it was Egan – that it was – and he definitely attempted to head to the ball past the goalkeeper.”
INCIDENT: as Billy Sharp caught Stuart Armstrong to the shins with his 25, Sheffield United were reduced to 10 men in the 85th minute. After coming on as a replacement 20 minutes earlier he was shown a straight red card.
DERMOT’S VERDICT: Would understand why it was given.
DERMOT SAYS:”The key issue here is the point of touch and also where the chunk is. If you watch it, the ball has gone beyond him, he is too late and I think that has been viewed by the referee and seen serious play. It is about the speed an intensity. The further distance you go, the more intensely you are going to hit that participant. I can fully understand why the referee has shipped off him.”
