Super League
7:45pm Friday 13th September
The KCOM Stadium
Tommy Makinson scored a for St Helens to ensure Hull FC’s last-ditch bid for a Super League play-off spot ended in failure.
Wigan Warriors’ victory over Castleford handed Hull one last opportunity to procure a top-five place.
But they weren’t great enough to take advantage as high-flying Saints ran out comfortable 22-6 victors thanks to Makinson’s treble and scores for Mark Percival and Regan Grace.
Seeing full-back Lachlan Coote converted only one of his five shots in goal, although it might have turned into a bigger winning margin.
Saints’ success came after confirming Tonga head trainer Kristian Woolf would be the replacement to Justin Holbrook season, however, the boss doesn’t need to finish his stint as a guy.
Beaten by Warrington Wolves in last season, Saints, as favorites, also went down in the past month’s Challenge Cup final.
That defeat ended dreams of a national treble after finishing runaway winners of their League Leaders’ Shield. However, they are still in contention for further silverware this season – like Hull.
Thanks to Makinson’s treble, the home side trailed 14-6 at half an hour and watched their hopes of procuring a top-five spot fading fast.
Makinson swooped pass to his touch down after nine minutes in Coote’s cut. He also added his second six minutes later after a kick sailed to the corner.
Three was a number to get team and the player when he admitted the following Coote pass six minutes to complete his hat-trick.
In between, prop Scott Taylor pass to provide Hull expectation of a comeback – and had Marc Sneyd clung on to his kick with the try-line at his fist.
Despite this setback, Hull started the second half strongly and nearly added a second try as Ratu Naulago tried desperately to attain Albert Kelly’s kick.
Saints needed their defence to keep Whites and the Black at bay and, with soaked up pressure, they jumped to depart Hull in deep trouble after 63 minutes from Percival with a fourth try.
Fortunately they were left by Coote’s wayward spot from drawing level. But as despair set in, the last-ditch approaches of Hull failed to add the points that were necessary.
This was game over when Grace put the finishing touches to Saints’ win late on to guarantee a year extension for grateful Castleford.
