(CNN) — The last time Serena Williams had played Arthur Ashe Stadium — a remarkable reduction to Naomi Osaka from the 2018 US Open final — it directed her to begin seeing a therapist and kept her out of wanting to get a tennis racket.

“It’s easy to be frustrated after having a match like this. But when I’m personally frustrated, I wake up , I do not feel as I need to go outside, train, and be better, that is more discouraging than the result.”
The match highlighted a beginning to the golf season which had eight US Open winners playing Monday’s last major.
Venus Williams Federer triumph
One of those former champions is Venus Williams, that dominated China’s Zheng Saisai 6-1, 6-0. The American is now 21-0 in the first round of the US Open in her career. At 39 years old, she is the oldest player in the singles draw 24 years of the women ; Coco Gauff is the prettiest in 15.
“I adore, love, love my job,” Venus Williams said to ESPN online daddy. “I really get to work outside. My whole job is to stay healthy and get a six pack. You don’t get better than that. While Federer is among the favorites, the Swiss hasn’t won this grand slam event in 11 years. And while Federer and Rafael Nadal have never faced each other the champion currently has faced a Nagal. That could be Sumit Nagal of India, a qualifier ranked 190th who hasn’t won a match. After a hiccup in dropping the first set, Federer went on to win 4-6, 6-1, 6-2, 6-4. His first-round record in the US Open now stands at 19-0.
“It was a challenging first set for me since I had the lead so things were looking great for me, but (Nagal) came right back and played really strong,” Federer, who finished with 57 unforced errors, said to ESPN. “Credit to him to really play a solid first set. I was missing a great deal of balls and function somewhat better because that also let me down and hopefully I was hoping to cut back to the unforced mistakes. It all came back in time. At the end, I actually played tennis, so I am happy.”
Barty, Pliskova endure 1st-round matches to advance
A huge surprise was to begin the US Open in the singles draw of the women. But crisis was averted, and the chase for the world No. 1 position is underway.
No. 2 Ashleigh Barty overcame a dreadful beginning, bouncing back after being down a series, to conquer No. 80 Zarina Diyas of Kazakhstan 1-6, 6-3, 6-2. The Australian is among 3 girls, linking No. 3 Karolina Pliskova of the Czech Republic and No. 4 Simona Halep of Romania, in contention to regain the world No. 1 position, which is now held by Osaka.
The French Open champion, barty, is the frontrunner, trailing Osaka by only 105 points. Before this summer, she held the top spot.
“Perhaps not the perfect start, not the perfect start, but it is what it is,” Barty, that had 36 unforced errors in the game, said. “We were able to discover a way then to get in the game and be more patient and really only kind of lock and wait until I got the perfect chunks and right patterns which I wanted.
“This was probably the biggest change in the second and third is I managed to secure more of those patterns more regularly and in the end build pressure to create more opportunities to break.”
Pliskova, that wants to reach the quarterfinals to have a chance endured two tiebreaks against fellow Czech Tereza Martincova, who’s ranked 138th, ahead of the next round.
“Not perfect, but I’m through so that is critical,” Pliskova stated. “Obviously, like I said before, the very initial rounds they’re always a bit nervous, I’d say, for the majority of the gamers.
