Chris Smalling says when his season-long loan transfer from Manchester United into Roma is successful he could see his long-term future.
After falling from favour at Old Trafford after Harry Maguire’s 80m coming smalling has joined the Serie A club before June 2020.
The defender indicated he could look to make the transfer permanent and was introduced as a Roma player in a media conference on Friday afternoon.
“That is a chance that came into me that I was very curious about, and I was quite excited to come,” he explained.
“It happened quite fast and now I focus on another game, getting up to pace with coaching in terms of the manager’s methods and hopefully have a very good season.
“To be able to have the chance in a huge club, and then if it prolongs and the club is happy then that I will definitely see a longer-term future in Italy.”
Smalling made 323 appearances for United since joining from Fulham nine years ago and during this time won the Premier League the FA Cup, the League Cup and also the Europa League.
He is the most recent of a range of England internationals to move to Italy also admits he has always wanted to play abroad.
“I have always had a desire down deep to experience this and have a chance to come to a large club who has big dreams,” he added.
“I really don’t need to live my life with doubts and also to have the ability to experience this and build on this journey, it is something I’m really anticipating.
“I’d heard many terrific things about Italy and Rome itself and is an experience that I’ll certainly savour.”
As they drew 1-1 with Lazio smalling was an artificial substitute for Roma.
