Catalans Dragons chairman Bernard Guasch has blamed the team’s meltdown on the players and he had been”affected” by the attitude of Tony Gigot.
In an interview with Perpignan paper L’Independant, Guasch said he has been devastated from the team’s current form, which included back-to-back home beats by Hull KR and duo London Broncos.
The Dragons were sitting following the Magic Weekend in May and began the season with high hopes of building on their 2018 Challenge Cup victory, however they’ll end after winning just three of the past 11 matches.
Guasch said the results revealed the team’s reliance on Wigan duo Sam Tomkins along with Michael McIlorum, that were suspended in a struggle with Warrington, and accused other people of being a disruptive impact.
He pointed the finger in”seven or six players at the end of the contract” and”six or seven problems with players who do not accept being told that they will not be with us next season”.
Among the likely departures is France that is out-of-contract international Tony Gigot, who rejected the deal following Guasch lost his patience with the 34, of a new bargain, which is off the table.
“We gave him all of the cards this season. I am really affected by his mindset,” Guasch explained. “Tony Gigot does not listen to the correct people. Sooner or later, you need to be severe and I am.”
Guasch voiced his optimism at Steve McNamara, who joined the team .
Asked if the coach’s position was in danger, Guasch explained:”No. We’ll extend his contract in the coming weeks of a couple of years more.
“I cannot overstate what Steve McNamara brought to the club, rescue us (from relegation) in the Million Pound Game at 2017, winning the Cup in 2018 and this season we were third in June.
“I am not one of those men and women who say,’When we play a fantastic game, the players are extremely good and when we lose and we are poor, the coach is poor’.
“We’ll learn from the good lessons to create 2020 a big year.”
