Maisie Summers-Newton won World Championships gold beating against her own world record.
The 17-year-old, that recorded the fastest time during the heats earlier in the day, finished the race in just two moments, 57.24 seconds, knocking 0.75 seconds of the present record which she set at the World Series in Glasgow back in April this year.
Talking to Sky Sports, Summers-Newton said:”It was such a great swim and to do it in the front of that audience was amazing, I am so happy with it.”
Her win also gave one of the minutes of the night as the crowds roared her on to victory as well as her sister could be seen on the screen showing her elation in the outcome to spectators.
“I got out and I explained to her why would be screaming?” Summers-Newton stated. “I think she was simply so happy to see me in front of a house crowd.”
Another swimmer who was hit by the home audience was Alice Tai, who kept everybody’s nerves on edge straight.
Claiming her gold medal in as many days, she finished at a Championship Record time of one minute 09.76 moments from the procedure.
For most of the raceTai looked very much in command but the USA’s Jessica Long upped her rate in the previous 50m and ended only 0.02 seconds behind the British swimmer.
“This was close, very close,” Tai told Sky Sports. “It was rather cool but also a bit intense. That I could hear the crowd and I can see Jess on my and I was really panicking. Like I not obtained this at a single point I was.
“I knew that this one could be quite close though, simply to have won it I’m really lucky.”
There was Championship Record for Louise Fiddes from the SB14 100m Breaststroke and a golden trophy as Great Britain added six medals daily three of their Para-Swimming World Championships to their tally.
