Former Burton Albion defender Kelvin Maynard has been shot and murdered in Amsterdam, Dutch police have confirmed.
The 32-year-old was captured in his car and police are appealing for witnesses since they look for two suspects that they say escaped on a scooter.
Officers from a fire station attempted to assist Maynard but he later died of his injuries.
The participant, who had a spell at Royal Antwerp, was club Alphense Boys.
Maynard combined Burton in November 2014 after the appointment as supervisor of Dutchman Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink.
Injury restricted him before he had been ruled out after suffering a knee injury in a game as the Brewers won the 2014-15 League Two title.
He abandoned Burton at January 2017 to combine Dutch side Spakenburg.
