(CNN) — It was ultimately a method of taking on police brutality and systemic racial injustice, but NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick claims his choice to kneel in protest throughout the pregame National Anthem started with one man.

Kaepernick, that led the 49ers into the 2013 Super Bowl, hasn’t played more than 900 days, his last game coming January 1, 2017, in a loss to the Seattle Seahawks.
