Former England striker Michael Owen’s row with Alan Shearer this past week, and the international break has been spiced by complaint of David Beckham.
Owen was criticised by Shearer for remarks he made in his newest book about joining Newcastle United, before he hit back by questioning his former team and global team-mate’s loyalty to the Magpies.
In his new book, reboot My Life, My Time, Owen claims that he still holds some bitterness towards Beckham for getting sent off at a World Cup last-16 game against Argentina in 1998, that England lost on penalties.
BBC Sport requested his best to be named by Owen England XI – because his debut in 1998. Himself wasn’t picked by the 39-year-old , but continue reading to see whether Beckham and Shearer left the trim – and have your say in the end of the article.
Because for quite a very long time now that formation has been suited by England players, I would go for a 3-5-2. Look under Terry Venables at Euro 96 and in France in the 1998 World Cup, if we were a team that is brilliant and should have gone further, together with Glenn Hoddle as manager. Then we went through a tiny disastrous period plus it coincided with 4-4-2 and variations of it.
I remember playing with the England team and we had Paul Scholes as a midfielder and matters like this. It was fairly obvious that 3-5-2 is that the creation that we have to have adopted and that knows just how far we would have gone in some specific eras.
So we are suited to it, into 3-5-2, Gareth Southgate went back at the final World Cup. Glenn Hoddle would be the director, no wonder, since he plays 3-5-2 as well.
This is probably an area where we have not been at our most powerful for several years. I’d say David Seaman is the best goalkeeper within the past couple of decades. He was a safe pair of handson. He awakened. He was a goalkeeper.
Somebody like David James has got – but the consistency of Seaman is what made him a really good goalkeeper. I was just with him for a period that is little but he had been a calming effect.
Sol Campbell: Sol was an fantastic player. He had strength pace and also a terrific reading of the game. I would say he was great on the ball because another two but, in terms of defending got past him. He may score goals and was very courageous, really good in the air. He was strong as a stone for a centre-half.
He is pretty severe but you may have a joke with Sol. Everyone’s different. There are typically 23 gamers, and therefore you don’t get everybody 19, when you match up with England. He could defend and climbed to the occasion that is big.
Rio Ferdinand: If you’re talking about classy players afterward one of the very first people you consider is Rio Ferdinand. He had been the Rolls-Royce of this footballing match. He made everything seem effortless, a tiny bit like Liverpool centre-back Virgin van Dijk today as it’s almost like he isn’t even trying and can be in second gear all the time. He could have easily played midfield, he was good on the ball. He had been exceptional.
He wasn’t one of those who used to lunge his body in and make a wonderful block. Each and every performance composed and was measured – nine out of 10 all of the time. He scored from the second round against Denmark – but I tease him about it all the time and it was definitely an own goal.
He didn’t score too many targets and, even it was probably that if I were able to criticise Rio in one manner. I don’t believe sticking his head and coming up for corners but he was an well-oiled machine.
John Terry: John has been an amazing player. You never saw him get trapped out although he did not have was pace. A reader of the game – only a pleasure to watch. You would train him and he would take your breath away how good he had been for a centre-half. I’m not being patronising into centre-halves but, since he was, generally, they were not as great on the ball.
His body would throw . He would block, he would win each header. He had been. Sometimes I think he was under-rated. He was absolutely outstanding.
He was one of the bubblier personalities, certainly a leader. He reassuring and was talking and, in the changing room before matches, he had been the loudest voice.
David Beckham: It was difficult to leave Gary Neville out because he was great. But I’m likely to place David Beckham in because, well, just have a look in a number of his moments, his caps and his England album. He had been a person from the dressing area, off the pitch however and around the group, he had been among the lads.
He chased a skill which has been rather unique at the time: the way he grabbed the ball; the way he had that form of dip and whip. He had a top-spinning bend onto his free-kicks and corners. He wanted to take a touch and cross it quickly, which is.
In my novel, I praise him to high heaven but when I mentioned to you asked you in case David Beckham did exactly the right point in 1998 by minding someone what could you say? He didn’t. He has sent off. It wasn’t my fault, the lovers’ or even yours. A mistake was made by him.
Would be that harmed our opportunities and that he made a mistake – it did. That is not likely to get in my team and doesn’t mean he’s not a player that is terrific.
Ashley Cole: Ashley Cole was regarded as likely the very best left-back in the world at one time. Everybody remembers the time – that he was outstanding in that game.
He had been that day wing-back: a brilliant defender who will get forward. He had the energy and legs to be in a position to do that, and wing-back probably suited him well. He was without being in mind, talkative. He was surely vocal, although he wasn’t the John Terry-leader style. He had been a complete pleasure in the group.
Steven Gerrard: I played with some amazing players – Zinedine Zidane was away from the scale concerning pure talent – but, if I was playing the greatest game of my life tomorrow, the very first person I’d likely take into conflict would be Stevie. He can do everything. He was massivehis stride was huge and he simply utilised to devour ground.
He was too big and too strong for his opponents, an passer of the ball, he tackle can score goals, defend and head. There was not anything really he couldn’t do. Should you ask him to sit because he is just too good for it the one thing you can expose him is.
I can’t give him any higher praise than that.
We were big mates. I combined Liverpool and we played with at precisely the identical group right through. We grew up playing alongside each other. We know each other’s games possibly more so than anyone else. We had that sixth feeling . I think he is actually among the best England payers to have lived.
Paul Scholes: he played on a level that is different to most and Everybody says Paul is a genius of an individual player. Because he is forever looking another way you have got to know the nuances of disguise and the sport for one and Scholesy to perform well. You think you have not been seen by him and he then whips your toes and one around the corner together.
You got to be on you feet with Scholesy. He’s thinking a step ahead of most people – and you may make him look a player because he will end up as you’re currently dreaming of something 35, giving the ball away!
He was gifted, scored goals and had a radar of a pass. He was unassuming. He was first off the training ground at the conclusion. Once I completed training, buy home , have my lunch and I was needing to get at the shower – but from the time I’d got into the dressing area, Scholesy had had a shower and moved. He was quite evasive.
Frank Lampard: Frank’s goalscoring record is phenomenal. He gets in my own team to get a midfielder for that number of targets is extremely scarce and that alone. He deserves the highest praise for like and getting the absolute most out of his career, rather dedication Beckham in many ways.
He cried and practised. While you’ve Scholes, who’s just a pure genius made to play soccer, you’ve got folks such as David and Frank that were there after perfecting their abilities and training hitting balls.
Regrettably, plenty of people questioned whether the venture that was Lampard-Gerrard could work collectively, because they were both excellent and it was probably. It had been too tempting for them to get forward that we didn’t have as much subject in the centre of midfield.
Then I think they would have flourished When we had an additional body, such as a Scholesy – Scholesy {sitting and enjoying the quarter-back function then Frank and S
