Hue Jackson wants another chance as head coach

After compiling a horrible record together with the Cleveland Browns, Hue Jackson is without an NFL gig for the 2019 season. Given his 3-36-1 album in two and a half seasons in Cleveland along with the odd 8-8 year with the Oakland Raiders at 2011, it’d seem Jackson will be hard-pressed to convince an owner to give him another shot.
The former Browns and Raiders manager told WFNZ Charlotte on Wednesday he thinks he could be a head coach.

“Oh, yeah, I mean I think I can,” Jackson explained, through Professional Football Talk. “I mean, just because the problem in Cleveland [didn’t work out] doesn’t mean that you can not coach. There is a lot of great coaches who arrived before me that went on and coached there and did great things. From time to time, the situation differs. I think if folks dig in and really take the time to examine the total situation there, perhaps they’d know it more. At the same time, I know what storyline gets put out. Hopefully, people will come back to the times once I’ve put myself in this position. I had to do something right. To go back and be a coordinator again or be a head coach, I do believe it’s in my own future. I’ve just got to go work through the process and see where it goes.”
Jackson interviewed for the Cincinnati Bengals training gig this offseason along with the Arizona Cardinals offensive coordinator job. He landed .
Once viewed as the prime candidate to succeed Marvin Lewis in Cincinnati, Jackson’s public standing got ripped to shreds through his stint at Cleveland. The stench of the 0-16 season will follow him everywhere. The record is poor enough to make it hard for a owner to sell him to the public. Even worse than the 3 wins in Cleveland could be quarterback Baker Mayfield’s public rebuke of Jackson’s style — something owners could take note of and weigh heavily — and also the troubling back-and-forth meetings shown throughout HBO’s Hard Knocks last training camp.
Yet it only takes one staff, and one proprietor to be certain that the situation had to do with Jackson’s bad tenure than his ability to coach.
“Here is a guy who knows how to conquer,” Jackson said when asked his story. “There is a lot of people who’d run out of it all. I’m not going to run from it. At the conclusion of the afternoon, our employees and the people who headed Cleveland, that does not mean those coaches can not coach or they don’t understand what they are doing. Perhaps that just was not the right match, the right situation for that group, and they simply need to have the right opportunity to have success.”
Jackson would probably have to do heavy image rehabilitation, beginning with landing a lower-level training gig in order for a team to even think of giving him a second shot. In a league where coaches are constantly recycled, perhaps there’s a possibility for the 53-year-old to build up his crippled image. It will take a great deal of time, and also a huge sell job to the public for it to take place. Even then, it would be a stunner when Jackson landed a second head coaching gig in the NFL.
