Blake Windred declared a championship record-equalling 63 to assert the first-round lead.
As he finished the first day with a two-stroke head over Junhong Park, windred birdied the last four holes to cap a nine-birdie opening around.
The Australian took good advantage of the day conditions, including another in the 10th before his finish guaranteed he’d sleep on the lead and cruising to the turn in 32.
“I simply did not want it to finish,” explained Windred, the entire world amateur No 11. “I was just enjoying it and I am just shattered it has ended. “I’m very pleased with the way I played. I think I sort of ticked so that excellent. I felt as though every shot was executed by me pretty much down the stretch.
“I didn’t even realise I birdied the final four until I signed the scorecard. The first nine, I sort of fought getting the pace. I just felt as though I could have wrapped in a few more. I am so glad I stayed patient and didn’t begin to induce it since I knew I’d the lines. I had been hitting fairways. There was always a chance to create some down the stretch.”
The winner will reserve a place in The Masters and The Open season, but Windred is not getting of teeing up at Augusta National and Royal St George’s, despite the prospect.
“When I was to win, then I’d definitely be playing those majors,” added Windred, who had originally planned to turn professional following this tournament. “it is a wonderful start, but yeah, we have still got three rounds to go.
“I guess this is something that I’ve practiced really hard for, like everybody else. I have been working incredibly hard on every aspect of my game, and this week, the goal is to win. There I need to win and that’s it. There is no other option.
“I’m not going to have ahead of myself, but in exactly the identical time, why not embrace all of the other stuff and just keep it going. Make a few more birdies tomorrow .”
