Captain Joe Root states the way Ben Stokes approaches the game on and off the field is now a inspiration for the England team.
Stokes’ incredible unbeaten century led England into a win to measure the Ashes series and tickets to its first four days of this highly-anticipated fourth Test at Old Trafford are already sold out.
Root is hoping for a more relaxed victory for England but should it move down to the wire again, he’s no doubt that his vice-captain will drag the side through more or help inspire other people to do so.
“One thing you know about Ben is that when the big occasions come about, he’s going to be there,” Root said.
“He will need to be part of it, he is never likely to shy away from any type of struggle, and he’s proven that this summer.
“For him, I think he has only got to keep working and doing precisely what he’s doing – he’s flying at the moment! Bottle it up he needs to exploit that and take advantage of it while he is in this form that is great.
“He is a great team man, he’s one of the guys who’ll go out of their way to help everyone and make sure they feel as they are ready. He offer advice, he is a senior player and pioneer. He shows that on the field.
“He’s got a fantastic balance of knowing when to say the appropriate things. He’s very passionate and he drags people . He is just a bloke that is good.
“If you mix this with the skill and ability that he has and it’s a wonderful mix and a terrific inspiration for not only the young men coming to this group but the senior players too.”
Root also supported Craig Overton will replace Chris Woakes from the England XI while Joe Denly will proceed up to start with Jason Roy because the hosts intention to capitalise on the momentum and goodwill brought about by their own dramatic win at Headingley dropping down to No 4.
“If you come off a win like that it’s a major lift for the entire squad,” he explained.
“For that match to unravel like it did and also for us to turn up here full of optimism and very much living in this show is… I thought how we played the week before at Lord’s it began to feel like we were wrestling our way back into the string and we did a lot of excellent stuff out there.
“It felt just like last week we made a great deal of errors and did not quite get it right but through some human brilliance and some resilience within our batting in the second innings and high quality bowling, bar the odd spell there or here, we managed to triumph.
“In a way, if we could bring those two performances together we feel as we’ll be in a really good place at the end of the week also.”
Watch day among this fourth Test between England and Australia at Old Trafford in 10am, Wednesday The Ashes.
