The fifth Ashes Test at The Oval is not the last game of this series – it is additionally Trevor Bayliss’ game as England head coach.
Bayliss has witnessed England win their first men’s World Cup, rise to the top of the ranks and win a house Ashes series.
England need to succeed at The Oval to draw this Ashes series 2-2 and have had a time in the Test arena.
Bayliss spoke to BBC cricket correspondent Jonathan Agnew about the highs and lows of the tenure as head coach.
Australian Bayliss was appointed England head coach in May 2015 along with his series accountable was the summertime home Ashes .
“The only way I could explain it [having an undercover training against Australia] has been it was like playing backyard cricket developing upward.
“You played your mates and brothers in the backyard and it was dog eat dog, but when you’ve completed, or in between innings, you ran down the river and then went for a swim or got in your bikes as best mates.
“But you played the game as hard as hard as you could do in order to find the bragging rights those guys and it was not any different back then or perhaps in this sequence.
“There’s some men in the Australian group I know very well. They are trying to win the match for their team as far as they possibly can and I would prefer that the England boys to win as far as possible as well.”
One of Bayliss’ focuses as head coach was to overhaul the white-ball team of England .
“It was very much an attention. Surely when I talked to [director of cricket] Andrew Strauss, the way England played they wished to flip that round and in the 2015 World Cup wasn’t up to scratch, but Test cricket wasn’t as a focus.
“It wasn’t as if we just pushed that to the desktop and stated white-ball has become easily the most essential. We knew this was coming up, this summer, with also a house Ashes and a house World Cup and we wanted to be in a position to win .
“I said to my wife before I came back over for this summer, I would love to win a minumum of one of the decorations.”
England won their first men’s World Cup in July in an enthralling match against New Zealand, which witnessed that the decoration determined by the number of boundaries played following a connected Super Over.
“Everything I thought of this following day was I did not really realise how large a match or how great a match that has been.
“When you’re actually involved in the sport, you are sort of thinking of tactics or what we can and should do, you’re not actually thinking of the amusement value, what the lovers are watching.
“But waking the following morning and watching the response in my telephone, and I likely got more messages 24 hours once I receive in a complete calendar year!
“The lap of honor at Lord’s, it was great to see the smiles not only just on the faces of those players and the management team, but the complete delight on the faces of everyone in that audience.
“It’s been great to participate with a World Cup triumph, but it is really the players that possess the accolades. They’re the ones which have gone out and done the work. I believe as a training staff and a management staff behind it, we’re blessed to participate in it and play with such a close role with the guys which have been in a position to venture out and get it done.”
Bayliss is seen as a figure and continues to be criticised at times for what is perceived as a training style
“Sometimes it’s irked me a tiny bit when you see a number of that kind of press because they simply don’t understand what happens.
“I also enable the coaches we use to perform their tasks and talk to a number of the players as well. It’s not like we don’t get together and go over each person, the way the team is playing, but since the trainer or bowling coach, I let them do their job and get on.
“We get together and discuss what we could speak with the batters or bowlers around but it’s the one message”
England have experienced an period in Test cricket on the previous four years – they were thrashed 4-0 in the Ashes in Australia and have been bowled out in New Zealand and the West Indies although they have not lost a home Test series since 2014.
“The matter England cricket have to answer isthe wickets that we play on in four-day cricket – so are they doing the job well enough so the players coming through are better able to really play at the next level?
“There are a whole good deal of good trainers and administrators at the county level. You speak to them, they have got the very same concerns as we’ve got here operating with England.
“There are a great deal of talented players right throughout the initial and second branch of county cricket. What kind of states have we have to perform in and how can we make it better?
“They’re the questions I believe have to be replied.”
